English in a minute

Subject: Up in the air
Welcome to English in a minute!
This expression sounds as if we are flying in the sky…
Up in the air
But does this actually mean we are floating above the gound?
Start the conversation:

A: So, you cousin is graduating from high school this year. Has she decided on a college?
B: She hasn’t decided on anything yet. All her college plans are up in the air. She doesn’t even know what she wants to study!
A: She had better get on it!

If something is up in the air, it is undecided and uncertain. If an object is floating through the air, it Is hard to know where it is going, which is where this expression come from.
In the past, people just said in the air, but in the mid-1900s, we added UP, making it up in the air
And that’s English in a minuteAnd that’s English in a minute

Subject: Get A Grip
Welcome to English in a minute!

Get A Grip
Start the conversation:
A: Oh no! I can’t believe I didn’t set my alarm last night, now I am going to be late for work, my boss will yell at me. And I will probably get fired!
B: Jonathan, Jonathan, get a grip, you will not be fired, just calm down and explain what happened to your boss

English in a minute
Subject: Elephant in the room
Welcome to English in a minute!
You would think that an elephant would be easy to see, but that is not the case with this idiom
Elephant in the room
Start the conversation:
A: I really don’t want to go to the meeting today,
B: Why? Just sit there and nod your head like I do
A: But nobody is willing to talk about the elephant in the room
B: What elephant?
A: The fact that our company have no money, broke,
B: Oh, that elephant in the room. Yeah, don’t  bring that up. Nobody wants to talk about that
An elephant in the room is a problem that everyone knows about but does not want to talk about. It also refers to a truth everyone knows, but ignores. A problem shouldn’t be ignored and neither should an elephant in the room with you!

And that’s English in a minute
